Abstract
This study investigated social communication development of autism spectrum disorders before 30 months. Subjects were 9 toddlers with autism spectrum disorder (at-risk). Data were collected every six months from 18 to 30 months. The results were as follows: First, eye gaze shifts and shared positive affect were no significant different among 18, 24, and 30 months, whereas gaze/point affect showed significant different between 18 and 30 months. Second, the rate of communicating were not significantly different across observation months ASD toddlers. In communicative functions, ASD toddlers showed lower on proportion of joint attention and social interaction compared with behavior regulation. Third, the low rate of conventional gesture observed at 18 months of age was not changed in order across the observation periods. Gaze shifts, shared positive affect, act for social interaction, and act for joint attention were the strongest predictors of autism symptoms before 24months of age. Implications for developing early identification and understanding early social communication in ASD were discussed.
